I don't know if i would use the word beautiful with Nina, she was an interesting looking woman but not beautiful. I think it's obvious no one will watch the movie if Adepero was cast as nina because unfortunately we live in the real word and her features are just too big for the big screens. Light skin good hair or not I think Miss Saldana will do a beautiful job, can't wait to see it.
There are so many more things to look at when casting roles. Zoe most likely delivers better , has more publicity hereby increasing returns for the movie and this are two of the most important things to look at when directors are making decisions.I had never even hear of Adepero until now. Yes Adepero looks like a spitting image of Nina but at the end of the day Zoe has more and better valid reasons to be cast as the character Nina. If looks is what matters the most then they would be casting relatives of Nina such as her daughter. Please y'all need to think past peoples appearance,At the end of the day Zoe is a BLACK WOMAN, this was the exact same thing white people were saying about Amandla Stenberg being cast as Rue from Hunger Games.
@babydoch i think that all supports the idea behind the original problem. People like Adepero are mostimes not given an opportunity to even audition for some of these roles hence the people who becomes popular are the people who are pushed. Although Ade isn't a no name there has been many movies that have come out with no name leads and has still done well due to the acting. I have no idea what went into the audition process and i'm sure Zoe did an awesome job for she is a good actress but casting is highly influenced by looks in Hollywood and i think in this case it's pretty clear.
back in the days Caucasian actors put on black face for this exact reason claiming the audience (who was white) wouldn't pay because they did not want to see actual black people playing these roles and that turned out to be bull soooo it's about changing this media's brain washing.
I definitely agree. Love Zoe but I can't see her playing this role, maybe she will surprise everyone but still there are soooo many actresses that they could've gotten to play Nina Simone. Wow..
I love Zoe and I think that she will do a great job. She doesn't favor Nina very much, similar cheeks, but that is okay. Denzel really didn't look like Malcolm X and he did an excellent job.
your reasoning is soo simple. Denzel was a blackman, Malcolm X was a blackman. Now can Denzel play James Dean or can angela basset play Frida Pinto, should be how you reason further. This hispanic woman should not be playing this Black woman. A continuous erasure of black women's images should not be encourage..Do not support that which insults your soul.
Zoe's a friend/fashion goddess in my head, but this is definitely reaching:( your point is truly valid as well as your personal choice for actress...both she & indie.arie would have been lovely picks! It saddens me to know that although the diversity of beauty has come so far, it stills shows so little...
I used to work for a major film studio and before a film is even made, lots of actresses names are thrown into the mix to see how much money the studio can make selling the film rights around the world with that actress attached. Although Ade/Tika may play/look better, the film is not going to sell well internationally (and make a good return for the investors) without at least one well known star attached.
The clout Zoe has from Avatar puts her in a different league than the other names mentioned. At the end of the day it is a business and everyone who puts money in to producing this film was as much money back. Unless it's an indie film/privately funded, the star needs a vehicle, and in this case it looks like it will be Zoe.
If it were Tika/Ade other than the black blogs/press would the film be getting much publicity before a frame has been even shot? Zoe will get the Vogues and Marie Claires of the world interested, would Ade/Tika? Doubt it. All decisons, casting and otherwise, are made for purely financial reasons, why do you think Tyler Perry has his won studio, Spike Lee doesn't make films anymore?
Zoe may not be your first choice but at least it isn't a case like Angelina Jolie playing that mixed race woman in the film A Mighty Heart!
this is just damn right annoying and devious..isn't Tika Sumpter, Rutina Wesley OR EVEN Gabrielle union a "known face" (to be honest they didn't even need to just stick to USA actresses)...there are SO MANY TALENTED BLACK ACTRESSES out there that could have fit the look/role of Nina!! it seems like this is a conscious decision by Hollywood to erase the look of black women on the screen do you realize how frustrating this is for black actors ESP with "African features"??! smh this whole issue is awful like the decision to cast Thandie Newton in half of a yellow sun...or Jacquline Fleming a bi-racial actress being cast as HARRIET TUBMAN in that Ab Lincoln film??!!! makes no damn sense black actors working their ass off as it is and then the actual "true to life roles" are still being given to every body else but them!!! damn painful shame this has got to stop
"Ever thought that it could be a singing role and they are looking for someone who fits that?"
that's a rubbish excuse YOU DO NOT forsake the 'look and embodiment of a character for the sake of singing ESP when its a "biopic" its not a fricking musical -_- if they wanted that then they would have gone for an actual singer and anyway Angela Basset mimed her way through "whats love got to do with it and hellllllllll SHE SMACKED IT!!! like a true pro her acting was second to NONE!!
This is the reality of the USA entertainment industry....Which is why we need more people like TYLER PERRY in it...I can't even believe some blacks hate the guy despite all he does to cast predominantly blacks in his movies...black pple and their hateration
I couldn't agree more...

ReplyDeletewell then her accomplishments despite her features shouldn't be for someone else to revel in.

ReplyDeleteWasn't Lauryn Hill suppose to play Nina at some point? I believe it fell through.
